Last year’s internal games in the areas of soccer volley and basket ball started and ended in a manner that is never worth recommending. Prior to the commencement of the games, there was much enthusiasm as to the final outcome of it. Nevertheless, the games ended while many questions are still left unanswered.
The whole gala started with an unprecedented win by the level 100s over the continuing students in the field of soccer. The level 100s won by a lone goal against their supposed Supremes who, according to public opinion, were tactically over-ridden due to complicities as regards previous records. As such, the continuing team was booked to disappointment in soccer after having expressed sentiments of supremacy even before the commencement of the games.
The competitions that were hotly contested afterwards were the volley and the basket ball encounters. This was especially of the basket ball since it has an element of the exhibition of muscular vitality, and strictly for men. In the girls volley encounter, the continuing team had a triumphant victory over their fresher counterparts. They won by ‘two straight’ to close the competition.
Notwithstanding, the boys encounter in both the volley and the basket ball never ended ceremoniously as expected. Through the climax of both games, the freshers tried to maintain their composure to attain victory. Being agitated by the performance of the 100s, the continuing team also tried to turn the anger of the previous defeat into positive energy. The mixture of these passions made the competitions very interesting at the early stages.
From the onset, through the climax to the closing of both games, one could clearly notice the pattern of play that was exhibited by both teams. Public opinion cited a high degree of self-centeredness among players of both teams. Consequently, the competitions were never seen as team work. Instead, it was calculated on how tactically skilful each player was when it comes to handling the ball.
The results of the extreme fanatics on both sides eventually brought the competitions to an unceremonious end, not just unceremonious, but surprisingly in a militant manner. With emphasis on the volley ball, this was apparently due to dissatisfaction on the part of the 100s as regards judgments passed by the referee. It therefore became increasingly difficult to ascertain why the games abruptly ended because each side had a very interesting complain to make. But it was certain and clear that the level 100s were those who initiated the move, by walking out of the field of play. A similar situation ended the basket ball encounter, also due to a judgment by the referee but was misunderstood.
Consequently, the continuing team protested against that action with a little bit of anger. Following that some of the level 100s who felt they could and should not be manipulated retaliated. On account, there was nearly a physical display of muscular ‘acrobatics’ had it not been for the immediate intervention by some spectators. Hence, the score lines of the games are still hanging simply because the competitions on both the volley and basket ball never ended as contests. It is rather unfortunate because this display is the first of its kind when it comes to internal games in IUCG. Now that passion has been inflamed, how do we ease the pain, and who takes the blame?
Whatever the case was, the players should have exhibited some sense of maturity. The game was no any formal competition that should be hotly contested for. It should have been seen as a kind of social activity meant for entertainment and socialization. Unfortunately, some looked at it outside this range and were ignorantly ever ready to physically attack. An example is said of the situation where a level 100 student attempted to ‘beat and hang’ a level 400 student in the course of the hullabaloo.
Whoever or wherever the sprouts of the problem should be investigated by the sports authorities of the SRC to find ways of preventing or stopping the occurrence of a similar situation. To the sportspersons, we expect the exhibition of maturity the next time such activities are organized. No insults meant!
